Brettany: A Handwritten Font That Elevates Web Design

Testing Brettany in a Real Web Project

I recently worked on a landing page for a wellness coaching brand and decided to test Brettany as the primary display font for the hero section. The font’s naturally flowing handwritten style brought a sense of warmth and approachability to the page, which aligned perfectly with the brand’s tone. I placed the headline over a soft background image and was immediately impressed by how Brettany stood out while still feeling elegant and intentional.

Visual Personality and Digital Appeal

Brettany is a script font that mimics real calligraphy, with soft strokes and organic movement. It has a personal, human feel that works beautifully for brands aiming to convey authenticity and care. Unlike overly stylized fonts, Brettany maintains a balance between decorative appeal and readability, making it ideal for digital use when applied thoughtfully. It’s the kind of premium font that feels both timeless and modern, especially in editorial design or boutique-style websites.

Using Brettany in Website Headers and Hero Sections

I found Brettany worked best in larger text elements like headlines, hero titles, and section headers. It added a unique visual touch to the coaching website’s landing page, especially when used for the main call-to-action. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for long paragraphs or small navigation text. The font’s decorative nature can reduce legibility at smaller sizes, which is important to consider for accessibility and responsive design.

Real-World Examples and Use Cases

Readability and Responsive Layouts

One of the biggest concerns when using a handwritten font like Brettany in web design is readability across devices. I tested it on mobile and found that as long as the font size stayed above 24px and the background contrast was strong, it remained legible. On dark backgrounds, I slightly increased letter spacing to ensure clarity. Brettany rendered well across browsers and devices, which is a big plus when working with web fonts that need to load quickly and display consistently.

What Not to Use Brettany For

While Brettany is a beautiful choice for visual impact, it’s not suitable for every part of a website. Avoid using it for:

  1. Body copy or long-form content
  2. Navigation menus or form labels
  3. Dashboard interfaces or data-heavy layouts
  4. Small buttons or mobile menu items

Its decorative style can make it difficult to read in these contexts, which could hurt user experience and accessibility.

Font Pairing for Web Design

To balance Brettany’s ornate style, I paired it with a clean sans serif font for body text and buttons. The contrast between the organic script and the structured sans serif created a strong visual hierarchy and helped guide the user’s eye through the page. For a more editorial feel, I also tried pairing it with a simple serif font, which gave the layout a more refined, magazine-style appearance.

Checking Font Features Before Use

Before finalizing Brettany for the project, I made sure to check the available styles, including ligatures, alternates, and swashes. The font came in multiple file formats, including WOFF and TTF, which ensured compatibility with most web platforms. It also supported multilingual characters, which was important for future internationalization. Most importantly, the commercial font license allowed for use in client websites and online stores, which is crucial for professional web design work.
